Дисертацію присвячено вивченню наукової проблеми мовної еволюції в аспекті історичної динаміки мовних процесів у лексико-семантичній системі середньоанглійської мови на загальнометодологічних засадах системології, сучасної системної лінгвістики і часткових принципах системно-функційної історичної лексикології в ракурсі діалектичної єдності системної стабільності функціонування словникового складу і його розвитку у проявах загальних тенденцій мовної еволюції й універсальних законів діалектики внаслідок впливу різнорівневих чинників і підпорядкування мовній детермінанті. Створено методологію системно-функційної історичної лексикології як нового напрямку лінгвістичного пошуку, розширенні аналітичного і методичного апарату сучасної системної лінгвістики розробкою методичного алгоритму системно-функційної реконструкції розвитку лексико-семантичної системи. Отримано нові результати, суттєві для теорії мовної еволюції, теорії мовних змін, теорії сучасної системної лінгвістики, теорії мовної інтерференції, сучасної теорії англійської мови і вирішення питань систематизації лексичного складу, його функційної диференціації, узусу, деривації, варіювання і функційної асиміляції лексичних запозичень. The scientific problem of the thesis concerns evolution of the English language in the aspect of dynamic language processes in Middle English lexical and semantic system, based on the general principles of modern systemic linguistics and systemic functional reconstruction of lexical and semantic system development as a methodological research algorithm of the dialectical unity of system stability in the lexical and semantic group of occupational terms. The paper presents elaboration of novel principles of systemic functional historical lexicology in line with the general systemological research methodology and on the basis of the primary complementary principles of the theory of modern systemic linguistics. The systemic and functional lexicology as a new approach to the lexical and semantic system investigation from historical and etymological perspectives is built on the interparadigmatic principles of historicism and systematicity, integrated in the definition of the subordination of individual lexical and semantic group development to its determinant as well as to the laws of dialectics in accordance with the laws of language evolution and the influence of various factors. The thesis presents the establishment of the new methods of modern systemic linguistics and new investigative techniques are designed, resulting in the creation of systemic functional reconstruction algorithm applicable to the lexical and semantic system development as a theoretical and empirical procedure. The determinant analysis of the lexical and semantic group of Middle English occupational terms is elaborated and employed for the first time by determining the interplay of the ontological and functional properties of the group, as well as the subordination of the whole complex of language changes to the determinant of lexical and semantic group as an embodiment of the language determinant. The concept of language determinant on the level of lexical and semantic system is developed as a set of minor determinants of its components, especially lexical and semantic groups, in the manifestations on deeper layers, including the interaction between phonological, morphological and lexical and semantic layers. The paper reveals the elaboration of the internal determinant on the level of the individual lexical and semantic group. The determinant outlines the functionally important features of the system components and the connections existing between them and is developed under the influence of the external determinant (the urge of the super-system to fulfil the identification function) as the functional characteristic of the entire system. The communicative perspective of the utterance, which is a fixed feature of nominating meanings of typical statements as the most important property of the language type (the determinant of the language) requires a certain functional load of lexical units, which defines the internal determinant of the lexical and semantic group, formed due to the external determinant. Functional differentiation of the vocabulary according to the classification and identification functions defines the varieties of the usage, in particular unstable, restricted-normal (limited) and steady-state. The external determinant of the lexical and semantic group of Middle English occupational terms is determined by examining definite changes in the language situation of the Middle English period with the aim of establishing functional request of meta-system (language community) on the performance of a certain sort of nominative functions, in particular the identification one. Theoretical significance of the thesis lies in the establishment of methodology of systemic functional historical lexicology as a new area of linguistic research, in the extension of the analytical and methodological apparatus of modern systemic linguistics with methodological algorithm of systemic functional reconstruction of the Middle English lexical and semantic system development as a methodological and methodical procedure, as well as its application on the material of the lexical and semantic group of Middle English occupational terms. New significant results for the theory of language evolution, theory of language change, theory of modern systemic linguistics, theory of language interference, as well as modern theory of the English language (problems of the systematization of the Middle English lexical structure, its functional differentiation, usage, derivation, variation and functional assimilation of lexical borrowings) are obtained. The results of the thesis outline important conceptual perspectives of their application on the basis of a new language material with the aim to identify natural connections between the language characteristics at all the evolution levels of other lexical and semantic groups.
