Abstract

Abstract As a result of hydrobiological studies of water bodies in the Tisa River basin, located in various mountain ranges of the Eastern Carpathians (Ukraine), conducted between 1984 and 1996, data were obtained on the abundance and biomass of nematode communities, and a measure of the destruction of organic matter by these organisms in water bodies was calculated (the paper includes 4 tables). Nematodes are a constant component of the meroplankton, periphyton, and benthos. During floods in some parts of the Tisa River, their abundance in the mer-oplankton may exceed that in the periphyton, which is being destroyed by the fast current at that time. In the benthos of the Tisa River, the highest nematode abun-dance is observed in the spring - millions/m². From the upper reaches to the lower reaches of the Tisa, there is an increase in structural indicators and the rate of or-ganic matter decomposition. In periphyton communities (on rocks), all indicators rise from spring to summer and decline in the autumn. In general, the abundance and biomass of nematodes in the periphyton are lower than in the benthos; only in the lower reaches of the Tisa River is the opposite pattern observed. The indicators of nematode population growth are significantly lower in small water bodies across various mountain ranges of the Carpathians. For springs, the maximum abundance of these organisms recorded by us was only 40,000 ind./m², and the biomass was 7.9 mg/m². Among the mountain ranges, nematodes thrive best in the water bodies of the Chornogora. This was observed in the Hoverla and Stogovets Rivers, as well as in other small flowing water bodies. A factor favorable to nematodes may be the lower degree of disturbance of the natural habitats in the Chornogora.
