Abstract

The process of translation of historico-cultural nominations is complicated and multilateral. This article is dedicated to the analysis of the translator’s decisions based on the specific features of nationally – biased words. The translator is a mediator between the original text and the reader. The professional competence of the translator includes practical and theoretical knowledge of the language, as well as background cultural knowledge. The commonest way of rendering the historico-cultural nominations is the combination of transcription and the TL lexical or descriptive equivalent (including the calques). In most cases it is the linguistic awareness of the author (or translator), along with his/her conceptual historical outlook, which determine the choice between the possible options.
