Abstract

А total of 25 patients with primary Та and Т1 superficial urothelial bladder cancer were included in the trial. АІІ patients were treated bу transurethral resection or resection plus adjuvant intravesical chemotherapy of doxorubicin at 50 mg/50 ml sterile water once а week for 4 weeks and then once monthly for 11 months. The recurrent lesions at 3 years were of stage Т1 in 4 of 21 patients (19%) and of stage Та in 1 of 4 patients (25%). The mean interval between treatment and first recurrence was 31 months. One patient developed distant metastases after treatment and died of bladder cancer with follow-up 12 months. These results suggest that doxorubicin is а useful drug for intravesical instillation chemotherapy in the prophylactic treatment of superficial urothelial bladder cancer.
