Образ матері в епістолярії В. Черчилля

Abstract

У статті розглядається специфіка творення образу матері (адресата) на основі листування В.Черчилля із його матір’ю леді Рендольф Черчилль. Об’єктом дослідження є вибрані приватні листи В.Черчилля та його матері, що увійшли до збірки «My Darling Winston». Ці листи найправдивіше відтворюють картину родинних стосунків між сином і матір’ю, відкривають духовну близькість, історичні та сімейні колізії та хроніки із присмаком недосказаності. В той же час обопільні листи В.Черчилля та леді Рендольф передають суб’єктивний образ епістолярного комуніканта (адресата) крізь призму авторської ментальності та рефлексії. Результати дослідження доводять, що символізм – одна із констант епістолярного ідіостилю Вінстона Черчилля. Асоціювання матері із Вечірньою зіркою (символом) притаманне приватним кореспонденціям В. Черчилля, у яких змальовуються конкретні життєві обставини та реальні люди. У таких листах його увага прикута до найменших візуальних, слухових і психологічних деталей. Образ матері наділений властивістю уособлювати, з одного боку, мудрість і керівництво, а з іншого, втілює захисну силу та пророцтво. На основі проведеного аналізу приватного епістолярію В. Черчилля охарактеризовано головні жанрово-стильові особливості (домінанти), які стали ключовими прийомами при характеризуванні образу адресата (матері). З-поміж них виділяємо найприкметніші: створення психологічного портрету реципієнта у листах; розкриття внутрішнього світу адресата (лист-образ адресата); розкриття внутрішніх думок перед адресатом, налаштування емоційного зв’язку між адресантом та адресатом (лист-апелювання до адресата); наповнення листовної фабули підтекстом, символічними образами й асоціаціями, що наближують ці листи до новаторського стилю доби модернізму у пошуках нових формальних засобів (листи-портрети адресата). Вищезгадані фактори дозволяють ідентифікувати портрет адресата в епістолярному діалозі та сприяють створенню тісного емоційного зв’язку (взаєморецепція) між адресантом та адресатом, присутність якого відчувається в родинному епістолярії В. Черчиля. Запропоновані засоби творення образу в приватному епістолярії В. Черчилля можуть бути предметом для подальших розвідок у цьому напрямку.

The article deals with the specificity of creating the mother’s character (the addressee’s portrait) based on epistolary of Winston Churchill and his mother. The object of the research is a selection of private letters between Winston Churchill and his mother, Lady Randolph Churchill. My Darling Winston, a collection of private correspondence casts the true light on a picture of family relationship between a son and a mother; it also reveals spiritual closeness between them, historical and family collisions and chronicles adding a touch of understatement. Moreover, mutual letters between Winston Churchill and Lady Randolph convey the subjective portrait of the epistolary recipient through the prism of authorial mentality and reflection. The results of the conducted research demonstrate that symbolism is one of the constant of W. Churchill’s individual style of writing. The mother’s portrait which is associated with a symbolic image of an Evening star remains the principal theme of Churchill’s private correspondence which reveals specific true to life situations and real people. In such letters the author’s attention is focused on the tiniest visual, hearing and psychological details. The mother’s character possesses a personification’s quality, on the one hand, representing wisdom and guidance, while on the other hand, having a protective power and prophecy. Based on the carried out analysis of W. Churchill’s and his mother’s private letters the main genre and stylistic features (dominants) have been characterized which have become the key techniques for portraying the addressee’s character (a mother)/ Among other dominants we highlight the following: creating a psychological portrait of the addressee (a letter of an addressee’s character); providing a fascinating insight into inner world of the recipient; revealing thoughts and feelings to the recipient (a letter of appealing to the recipient); setting the emotional connection (mutual reception) between the writer and the recipient; filling the epistolary plot with subtext, symbolic images and associations approaching these letters to innovative style of Modernism in search of new formal means (a letter of the addressee’s portrait). All the factors mentioned above let us identify the portrait of the recipient in the epistolary dialogue and contribute to creating close emotional link between the addressor and the addressee the presence of which is experienced in W. Churchill’s family epistolary. Thus, the suggested means of creating the mother’s portrait in W. Churchill’s private epistolary may contribute to future research in this field.
