dc.description.abstractTranscarpathia maintained close ties with the Holy Mount Athos. The spiritual influence of monasteries on Mount Athos Orthodox population of the region was so significant that in 1920ies and 1930ies more than a dozen monasteries appeared in the region, and today on the territory of the region there are 44 Orthodox monasteries. In this regard, Transcarpathia is rightly called the “small Athos”. We should also point out the influence of Mount Athos for the revival of Orthodoxy in the region at the beginning of the 20th century. It is in the St. Panteleimon monastery that Alexij (Kabaljuk), the leader of the religious movement converted to Orthodox; it was from Mount Athos that Transcarpathia obtained theological books, icons, church utensils; Athos was the place where the painters of Transcarpathia learned their craft, and subsequently could spread their knowledge among fellow countrymen and satisfy the need for painting churches. Athos elders’ example inspired local people to spiritual feats.uk
