Особливості навчання англійської мови в чоловічих школах Буковини (кінець ХІХ – початок ХХ ст.)

Abstract

У статті досліджено методичні аспекти навчання англійської мови в чоловічих школах Буковини в кінці ХІХ – на початку ХХ століття. Здійснено огляд наукових праць на дану тематику і обґрунтовано новизну та актуальність дослідження. Охарактеризовано процес навчання англійської мови в чоловічих загальноосвітніх навчальних закладах у період перебування Буковини у складі Австро-Угорщини. Проаналізовані навчальні програми та описані підручники чоловічих шкіл досліджуваного періоду, віднайдені в бібліотеках м.Чернівці. This article explores the methodological aspects of teaching English in male schools of Bukovina in the end of the XIX – beginning of the XX century. The review of scientific papers on this subject has been done and the novelty and relevance of the research have been proved. The process of learning English in male secondary schools in Bukovina during its stay in the Austro-Hungarian Empire has been characterized. The curricula have been analyzed and the textbooks of male schools of the period under investigation, found in the libraries of Chernivtsi, have been described. The future perspectives of the investigation have been outlined. The results of the research show that the methodology of teaching English in male schools of Bukovina of the study period was in the state of transition of teaching methods from grammar-translational to direct ones. The main drawback of the English teaching process was the absence of textbooks written in the mother tongue of the population of the region. At the same time the above mentioned fact makes it possible to suggest that the level of students’ knowledge of German was high enough to allow them study English using German-speaking textbooks.
