Структурно-семантична характеристика комплексного словотвірного поля середньоанглійських суфіксальних агентивно-професійних назв із суфіксом –man

Abstract

Стаття присвячена дослідженню комплексного словотвірного поля середньоанглій- ських агентивно-професійних назв (АПН) із суфіксом -man, що побутували в досліджу- ваний період виключно як компоненти антропоформул. Розглянуто основні словотвірні моделі, подана семантична характеристика основ іменників. Результати дослідження дають нам переконливі підстави вважати суфікс -man у середньоанглійському періоді продуктивним. Theoretical aspect of the study of the word-building field of Middle English occupational names with the suffix -man is given in the article. The investigation of word-building productiveness of this suffix in the Middle English proved to be urgent in modern linguistics. The complex derivational field of Middle English occupational names is studied in the article. The main ways of word-building on the basis of proper English stems are determined. The results of our investigation prove the affix –man to be productive in the Middle English period. The complex word-building field of the 563 Middle English occupational terms that functioned as the surnames being the elements of the proper names formulas is investigated in the article. The suffix derivatives comprise 51%, the stem of the word-building field is made up of the derivatives with suffix -er(e) (47% of all derivatives under investigation) and the derivatives with suffix –man (40% of all derivatives under investigation). The results of our investigation, especially the amount of the derivatives with suffix –man within the occupational terms as the lexical group of the Middle English vocabulary prove the affix –man to be productive in the Middle English period. The further investigations of the productiveness of the suffix –man in different lexical groups of Middle English seem promising.
