Abstract:	In the article the main stages of life and research career of outstanding Ukrainian historian Y. I. Shternberg (1924-1992) are followed. The authors give general characteristic of his contribution to research of vital (actual) problems of Hungarian history, history of relations among Hungarians, Ukrainians and Russians, and heraldry in Transcarpathia. The authors of the article accentuate on high teaching skills of their teacher (preceptor), his active participation in social life. They emphasize the importance of scientific legacy of the researcher and the need to continue its thorough study.
