Abstract: The name of Vasil Hrihorovich Kukolnik (1765-1821) belongs to the galaxy of outstanding Transcarpathian scientists who lived and worked beyond their native land. Originated from Mukachevo district, the final-year student of Lviv University, a gifted scientist and pedagogue, Doctor of Law and Philosophy, Professor of Zamostsky Lyceum, the first director of the Nizhin gymnasium of higher sciences, the author of numerous scientific research and popular-science works. Our information is aimed at learning the most unknown period of the scientist’s biography, so called “zamostsky period” (1789-1804). It was at that time that Kukolnik proved to be a professional naturalist and agronomist, pedagogue and lawyer, historian and journalist, the founder of the unique journal entitled “Economics journal” being published in the years of 1803-1804. Such edition was a rare one in the Middle and Central Europe at the end of the XVI11 and the beginning of the XIX centuries. It gave evidence that Kukolnik as a scientist had a profound understanding of social and economic development of the European society at the epoch-making turning point of history.
