Revision of the experience of transformation processes in the post-Soviet space and search for the new opportunities to contest the challenges of modernization urge the importance of analyzing material and non-material factors that determine the progress of modern democratic states. The dialectic connection between politics and economy is well known. Less researched is the connection between a nation’s economic development and its mentality. The article aims at filling the gaps that have existed in Soviet times and deserve more attention from contemporary domestic social scientists. With due consideration of the interdisciplinary approach, the article emphasizes on historical approaches to highlighting the influence of mentality on the economy of Estonia, the most successful of the former Soviet republics. The methodology is based on the analysis of mental characteristics of Estonian ethnos, employing formalized methods. With its state sovereignty renewed, the country has set the goal of returning to the European civilization, whereof it has always felt a part. Western countries have never recognized the legitimacy of Soviet annexation, regarding the Balts as courageous combatants against totalitarianism. Their strife to join the European Union met powerful support and assistance. On the road to eurointegration, the Estonians fulfilled all the requirements diligently, manifesting their inherent traits of the national character, mostly consistent with the traits of European mentality. Estonia’s example testifies that without learning the specifics of a country’s development, without accounting the formative conditions and the characteristics of its mentality, effective reformation of the life of a society is impossible. It is emphasized that governments should pay more attention to research in the mental models of the society, and take efforts to changing intellectual tenets as broadly as at the state level. Estonia’s experience of transformation from a Soviet republic to a developed European country carries utter importance to Ukraine.
