The given article presents the analysis of the notions which are considered to be the essential part of felicitous communication in modern world. They are politeness and etiquette. It is thought that, on the one hand, politeness serves as a sign of respect towards the partner of communication, on the other hand, it explicates the social and communicative competences of a person and his ethical and moral values during interpersonal interactions. Politeness can be realized by means of verbal and non-verbal actions. As a rule, it covers everyday communication creating the most favourable atmosphere for communicative interaction between people. Unlike politeness, the use of etiquette is limited by certain social groups or by certain circumstances. That’s why linguists single out different kinds of etiquette: business etiquette, diplomatic etiquette, etc., – when actualization of one’s own social status towards the status of the other communicant is foregrounded. Politeness is referred to as “technical language” (O. Behaghel) or “sublanguage” (G. Held) as it implies the usage of certain lingual forms that function to actualize conventional behaviour and to realize polite communication. Etiquette is a set of behaviour rules which concern the expression of one’s attitude to other people (address forms, greetings, behaviour in public places, manners, etc.) whereas speech etiquette embraces word forms of politeness and courtesy. Comparison of the notions “politeness” and “etiquette” has allowed us to conclude the following: politeness is a universal category that is common to people of any nation. But it has its own national specific features that are reflected in choice of certain etiquette formulae. Despite the differences between the notions “politeness” and “etiquette” that are quite alike indeed, it is important to emphasize that they both are aimed at creating favourable atmosphere and conflictfree flow of communication.
