Етимологічний склад англомовної топонімії Великобританії

Abstract

Статтю присвячено дослідженню етимологічного складу англомовної топонімії Великобританії. У статті надається визначення понять «топонім», «топонімія», «топонімічна система», з’ясовуються характерні ознаки та напрями дослідження топонімічних систем та їхніх одиниць. У статті аналізується також походження англомовних топонімічних одиниць, встановлюється ареал їх поширення. Топоніми є власними географічними назвами на позначення місцевості, населених пунктів, регіонів, об’єктів рельєфу. Поняття «топонімія» та «топонімічна система» є синонімічними та використовуються науковцями для позначення сукупності географічних назв певної території. Ключовими ознаками топонімічних систем є територіальність, різний час та різні мови походження їх одиниць. Походження одиниць тієї чи іншої топонімічної системи визначається в межах історичного підходу їх дослідження. Топонімічна система Великобританії представлена великою кількістю різноманітних географічних назв, що надійшли до англійської мови в різні часи та з різних мов. За своїм походженням англомовні топоніми Великобританії поділяються на cуто англійські, запозичені та гібридні. Cуто англійські топоніми є фактично одиницями англосаксонського та давньоанглійського походження, що з’явилися внаслідок вторгнення германських племен на територію британських островів. Ця група топонімічних назв є найбільш чисельною серед інших визначених груп топонімічних одиниць британського варіанта англійської мови. Запозичені топонімічні назви представлені одиницями кельтського, латинського, скандинавського, норманофранцузького походження. Поява цих одиниць також зумовлена факторами переселення на територію британських островів та її завоювання різними народами. Гібридні топонімічні назви Великобританії є одиницями, що містять суто англійські морфеми та морфеми, запозичені з інших мов. Запозиченими є морфеми кельтського, скандинавського (переважно суфікси) та нормано-французького походження. В окремих гібридних топонімічних назвах досить важко визначити походження запозичених морфем.

The article is devoted to the research of etymological composition of the English-British toponymy. The definitions of the notions “toponym”, “toponymy”, “toponymic system” are given in the article. Peculiar features, approaches of research of toponymic systems and their units are clarified. The origin of British English toponyms and the area of their distribution is also determined in the article. Toponyms are language units, proper names used to denote objects of geographical area (cities, towns, villages, settlements etc) and objects of relief (mountains, rivers, forests etc). The notions of “toponymy” and “toponymic system” are viewed by scholars as synonymic. These units are used to denote a set of geographical names of a certain area. Their territoriality, time and language of origin of their units are considered to be key features of toponymic systems. The origin of units of any toponymic system is investigated within a historical approach. Toponymic system of Great Britain is represented by a great number of different toponymic names, that came into the English language in different times and from different languages. According to their origin these toponymic names are subdivided into pure English, borrowed and hybrid language units. Pure English toponyms are units of Anglo-Saxon and Old English origin that appeared on the territory of the British Isles because of the invasion and settlement of the Germanic tribes. This group of toponymic names is most numerous among other groups of toponyms existing in the British variant of the English language. Borrowed toponymic names are represented by units from Celtic, Latin, Scandinavian and Norman-French languages. These toponyms appeared because of the settlement of different peoples on the territory of the British Isles and their invasions. Hybrid toponymic names are units that contain pure English morphemes and morphemes borrowed from other languages. Borrowed morphemes are of Celtic, Scandinavian (mainly suffixes) and Norman-French origin. It is very difficult to determine the origin of borrowed morphemes in some hybrid toponymic names.
