Internet discourse is the latest concept in linguistics, which is not yet fully studied. Now, the Internet discourse is replacing various types of private and official communication and has made it possible to keep in touch quickly and easily regardless of the geographical location of communicants. The only condition for successful interaction is connecting to the Internet. Communication on the Internet exists in various forms: e-mail, sites, blogs, forums, societies, platforms, social networks and others. The term “discourse”, as it is understood in modern linguistics, is close in content to the notion of “text”, but emphasizes the dynamic nature of speech communication. In contrast, the text is conceived mainly as a static object, the result of linguistic activity. Sometimes discourse is understood as the simultaneous interaction of two components: the dynamic process of speech activity, written in its social context, and its outcome. The article analyzes and categorizes such a newest phenomenon of modern Internet discourse as a hashtag. Hashtags as a social phenomenon appeared recently and are becoming more and more popular. The article considers the use of hashtags from a linguistic point of view: their grammatical and syntactic structure, semantics, and also explores the use of hashtags in frequency. For a long time, the hashtag existed only written in Latin characters, mostly in English, but over the past five years, Cyrillic hashtags have become increasingly popular in the countries that use the Cyrillic alphabet. Thus, Ukrainian-language hashtags are distributed among users in Ukraine in such social networks as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, which made it possible to conduct a comparative analysis of English-language and Ukrainian-language hashtags.
