Специфіка острівного хронотопу в англійських художніх текстах першої половини ХХ ст.

Abstract

У статті вивчено специфічні особливості острова: великий/малий, живописний/неживописний (бідна флора і фауна) у найвідоміших творах англійської літератури першої половини ХХ ст.: «Фрейя Семи островів», «Перемога» Дж. Конрада, «Острів фарисеїв» Дж. Ґолсурсі, «Місяць і шеляг» В.С. Моема, «Простак із Несподіваних островів» Б. Шоу, «Містер Блетуорсі на острові Ремполі» Г. Уеллса, «До маяка» В. Вулф. Авторська специфіка образу «острів» досліджується в різних літературних парадигмах ‒ реалізмі, неоромантизмі, модернізмі, в яких острівний образ набуває нових інтерпретацій. Представники різних літературних парадигм додають нові ідеї до острівного образу (наприклад, острів як місце для створення нового суспільства, нової цивілізації і навіть нової раси людей у творах «Містер Блетуорсі на острові Ремполі» Г. Уеллса і «Простак із Несподіваних островів» Б. Шоу) і також надають нових значень до вже відомих ідей (створення нових цінностей), символів (символ човна / корабля, води). Топонімічна острівна специфіка відображає внутрішній світ особистості і формує метафору «людина-острів». Острівний образ представлено не тільки як географічну категорію, але й як персоніфікацію власного «я» людини, що продемонстровано в потязі до ізоляції та усамітнення. Острів сприймається як ілюзія, що відображає неможливість винести ізоляцію (Г. Уеллс), внутрішні протиріччя (Дж. Конрад) або депресію (Б. Шоу, В. Вулф). Острівний образ, створений Дж. Ґолсурсі і В.С. Моемом, має інші функції. Образ острова в романі В.С. Моема порушує проблему міжкультурної комунікації. Острівний образ в інтерпретації Дж. Ґолсуорсі виявляє острівний снобізм англійців та їхню тенденцію до консерватизму (Холм-Окс як метафорична персоніфікація снобізму англійців). Назва «Острів фарисеїв» описує не тільки географічне положення країни, але й духовно обмежену цивілізовану Англію з її «острівним» упередженням. Острів у романі Дж. Ґолсуорсі відображає вузькі погляди англійців. Опис острова як ілюзії, де навіть ідеальна особистість не може врятуватися від самотності, або острів як місце для порушення проблеми острівного снобізму ‒ це специфічна риса острівного образу в англійській літературі першої половини ХХ ст. Ця риса виявляє депресивний стан людини. Крім того, ця риса репрезентована за допомогою опису топонімічних особливостей острова та часу.

The specific peculiarities of the island (big / small, picturesque / non picturesque (poor flora and fauna) are studied in the most famous works of the English literature of the first half of the XX century: “Freya of the Seven Isles”, “Victory” by J. Conrad, “The Island Pharisees” by J. Galsworthy, “The Moon and Sixpence” by W.S. Maugham, “The Simpleton of the Unexpected Isles” by B. Shaw, “Mister Blettsworthy on Rampole Island” by H. G. Wells, “To the Lighthouse” by V. Woolf. The author’s specificity of the image “island” is examined in different literary paradigms: realism, neoromanticism, modernism in which the island image gets new interpretations. The representatives of different literary paradigms add new ideas to the island image (for example, island as a place for creating a new society, new civilization and even a new race of people in the works “Mister Blettsworthy on Rampole Island” by H.G. Wells and ”The Simpleton of the Unexpected Isles“ by B. Shaw) and also give new meanings to the well-known ideas (creation of new values), symbols (the symbol of a boat / a ship, water). The toponymycal island specificity reflects the inner world of a person and forms the metaphor “person-island”. The island image is not only represented as a geographical category but as a personification of the own “I” of a person which is demonstrated in the aspiration to isolation and privacy. The island is perceived as an illusion reflecting impossibility of bearing isolation (H.G. Wells), internal contradiction (J. Conrad) or depression (B. Shaw, V. Woolf). The island image created by J. Galsworthy and W.S. Maugham has different functions. The island image in the novel W.S. Maugham raises the problem of intercultural communication. The image of the island in the interpretation by J. Galsworthy exposes the island snobbery of the English and their tendency to conservatism (Holm Oaks is metaphorical personification of snobbery of the English). The name §The Island Pharisees” describes not only geographical position of the country but also narrow-minded civilized England with its “island” prejudice. The island in the novel by J. Galsworthy reflects confined views of the English. The description of an island as an illusion when even a perfect person cannot save himself from loneliness or an island as a place for setting a problem of island snobbery is the specific feature of the island image in the English literature of the first half of the XXth century. This feature exposes a depressive state of mind of a person. In addition this feature is represented by means of toponymycal peculiarities of an island and time.
