Хронотоп у новелі "Овальний портрет" Едгара По

Abstract

Стаття присвячена аналізу часу і простору в новелі «Овальний портрет» американського письменника ХІХ ст. Едгара Аллана По. На прикладі новели «Овальний портрет» Е. По детально розглянуто типи хронотопу: історичний, соціально-побутовий, ретроспективний та особистісний, котрі у структурі новели, об’єднуючись, утворюють загальний хронотоп, який впливає на жанрову модифікацію твору. У статті доведено, що хронотоп новели «Овальний портрет» має різнорівневу структуру, яка характеризується роздвоєнням. На фоні реального історичного та соціально-побутового хронотопу ХІХ ст., виписаного у реалістичній традиції, презентується ретроспективний хронотоп, що характеризується ірреальністю, оніричністю та містичністю. Готичні мотиви є визначальними в описі реального часопростору. Замкнений простір, який утілюється за допомогою топосів «замок», «вежа», «кімната», «портрет», виписаний у межах романтичної традиції, що впливає на особистісний часопростір героїв. Символічний образ портрета є тим стрижнем, який об’єднує різнорівневі хронотопи. Час оповіді має тривимірну структуру, де кожен із часових видів виконує певну функцію. Фабульний час тісно переплітається із сюжетним, однак ускладнюється наративними прийомами, котрі уповільнюють, призупиняють або переривають сюжетний час. Наративний час характеризується глибоким психологізмом, що проявляється завдяки щоденниковій формі оповіді, яка передбачає достовірність і суб’єктивність, і представлений ракурсами бачення оповідача. Час у ретроспективному хронотопі є невизначеним і набуває фольклорних рис. В історичний і соціально-побутовий хронотоп органічно вплітаються особистісні хронотопи головних героїв: хронотоп художника характеризується деградацією та стихійністю, тоді як хронотоп його дружини – замкненістю, звуженням і занепадом. Поєднання дуальних хронотопів, що належать до різних епох, творить неповторний художній світ новели, який має різновекторну структуру, та є стильовою особливістю автора.

The article is devoted to the analysis of time and space in the novel “The Oval Portrait” by the American writer of the 19th century Edgar Allan Poe. There are four types of chronotopes in the article (historical, social, retrospective and personal chronotopes), which are united in the structure of the short story, and complete a common chronotope that influences the genre modification of the work. The chronotope of the short story “Oval Portrait” has a split-level structure, which is characterized by bifurcation. On the background of the real historical and social chronotope of the 19th century, written in a realistic tradition, a retrospective chronotope is presented, which is characterized by irreality, oniric and mysticism. The gothic motives are decisive in describing the real time-space. The closed space, which is implemented with the help of topos “castle”, “tower”, “room”, “portrait”, is in the framework of romantic tradition, which affects the personal time-space of characters. The symbolic image of the portrait is the core that unites split-level chronotopes. The narration time has a three-dimensional structure, where each of the time types perform a certain function. Artistic time has a variable form: the story time is closely interwoven with the plot, and it is complicated by narrative techniques that slow down, pause, or interrupt the plot time. Narrative time is characterized by psychologism, which is transmitted through a diary, and suggests authenticity and subjectivity, and is presented by the narrator’s vision. Artistic time in the retrospective chronotope is indeterminate and acquires folk features. The personal chronotope of the main characters is an integral part of the historical and social chronotope. The painter’s chronotope is characterized by degradation and spontaneity, the chronotope of his wife – isolation, narrowing and decay. A combination of dual chronotopes belonging to different epochs create a unique artistic world of short stories that has a multi-vector structure and is a stylistic feature of the author.
