Abstract:	The aim of the article is to elucidate peculiarities of the study of modern history in Ukraine in the second half of XIX – early XX centuries. Author notes the main tendencies in research and teaching of modern (“new”) history in Ukrainian universities at this time, analyses the main achievements of the theoretical thought of Ukrainian historians who were specializing in this branch of learning (M.N.Petrov, I.V.Luchitsky etc). A particular attention is given to the formulation of the scientific schools in the investigation of modern history. It is concluded that the historical science in Ukraine was developing in the context of the West European historical thought. This theme is topical and urgent in contemporary post-Soviet Ukrainian historiography.
