Проблема становлення особистості в романі Елеанор Портер "Проти течії"

Abstract

Стаття ґрунтується на матеріалі роману Е. Портер «Проти течії» 1907 р. видання. Досліджено проблему формування особистості героїні твору, особливості художньої реалізації зазначеної проблеми. Актуальність роботи визначається відсутністю в сучасному літературознавстві комплексних досліджень творчості Е. Портер, аналізу семантики, типології, поетики художніх образів у романістиці письменниці. Новизна роботи полягає в тому, що до наукового обігу буде введено новітній фактичний матеріал – результат дослідження роману Е. Портер «Проти течії». Об’єктом дослідження є структура, функціонування та динаміка образу головної героїні роману. Предмет дослідження становить проблема формування особистості на прикладі образу головної героїні твору. Метою дослідження є визначення художньої концепції формування особистості в романі Е. Портер «Проти течії» у контексті історико-культурних закономірностей розвитку літератури США періоду після Громадянської війни. Методами дослідження є порівняльно-історичний, типологічний, порівняльний; застосовані також прийоми спостереження, інтерпретації досліджуваного матеріалу, елементи хронотопного аналізу. Результат дослідження становлять визначення зв’язків творчості Е. Портер із загальними літературно-мистецькими тенденціями, традиціями національної літератури і культури США; з’ясування образотворчих і виразних засобів художнього мовлення письменниці, що вплинули на розвиток і формування образу головної героїні роману; виявлення особливостей творчого стилю Е. Портер; визначення ідейно-художнього напряму, жанрових особливостей роману «Проти течії». Теоретичне значення статті зумовлене тим, що конкретизовано ознаки образної системи роману «Проти течії», уточнено методику вивчення художніх образів у романній спадщині письменниці. Особливості образної системи роману «Проти течії» проаналізовано на тлі літературного процесу США після Громадянської війни. Результати дослідження є важливими для подальшого вивчення категорії «художній образ» у контексті розвитку літератури США на початку ХХ ст. Образна система та індивідуальний стиль Е. Портер значною мірою залежать від закономірностей історико- літературного процесу в США; образ Маргарет, головної героїні роману, характеризується динамікою, відкритістю до інтерпретації. Основними критеріями визначення системи образів у романі Е. Портер є дихотомія, хронотопна єдність, реалістичне відображення різних прошарків суспільства та соціальних суперечностей. У контексті проблеми формування особистості автор роману продемонструвала власну морально-етичну позицію.

The article is based on the material of E. Porter’s novel “The Turn of the Tide” 1907 edition. The problem of formation of the girl’s personality, features of artistic realization of the specified problem is investigated. The actuality of the work is determined by the absence in modern literary criticism of comprehensive studies of E. Porter’s work, analysis of semantics, typology, and poetics of artistic images in the novel of the writer. The novelty of the work is presented in the newest factual material that will be introduced into scientific circulation is the result of the study of E. Porter’s novel “The Turn of the Tide”. The object of research is the structure, functioning and dynamics of artistic images in the novel. The subject of the research is the problem of formation the personality of the protagonist of the work. The purpose of the study is to represent the dynamics of the artistic image in the context of historical and cultural patterns of development of US literature in the period after the Civil War. The methods of the research are comparative-historical, typological, comparative; methods of observation, interpretation of the studied material, elements of chronotope analysis are also used. The result of the study is to determine the links between the work of E. Porter with the general literary and artistic trends, traditions of national literature and culture of the United States; elucidation of the visual and expressive means of artistic speech of the writer which influenced the development and formation of the image of the main character of the novel; identifying the features of the creative style of E. Porter; definition of ideological and artistic direction, genre features of the novel “The Turn of the Tide”. The theoretical significance of the article is due to the fact that it specifies the major features and elaborates the method of studying artistic images in the writer’s artistic prose. Moreover, the varieties and poetic peculiarities within the span of the literary process in the United States after the Civil War have been analyzed as well. The results of the research are important as they will pay a solid background for further study especially in the category “artistic image”, as well as for studying the features of ideology in the literature process of the United States of the early twentieth century. Conclusion: the figurative system and individual style of E. Porter largely depends on the laws of the historical and literary process in the United States; the image of Margaret, the main character of the novel, is characterized by dynamics, openness to interpretation. The main criteria for determining the system of images in E. Porter’s novel are the dichotomy, chronotopic unity, realistic reflection of different strata of society and social contradictions. Against the background of the problem of personality formation, the author of the novel demonstrated his own moral and ethical position.
