Греко-латинські афікси та їх роль у термінотворенні (на матеріалі терміносистеми “Environmental Science” сучасної англійської мови)

Abstract

Термінологічна робота здійснюється за останні десятиліття в настільки широких масштабах, що важко сказати щось нове в цій галузі. Немає єдиного розуміння основоположних термінів і місця загальної теорії термінології серед наукових дисциплін. Термінотворення має свою специфіку, яка полягає в тому, що значна кількість спеціальних слів запозичені з інших мов. Це зумовлено науково-технічним прогресом, співпрацею вчених різних країн світу. Той факт, що протягом багатьох століть невичерпним джерелом мови науки для багатьох народів були латинська та грецька, багато в чому визначило характер термінологічних систем різних наук. У статті на матеріалі терміносистеми “Environmental Science” проаналізовано формування англійських екологічних термінів на базі греко-латинських афіксів. Говорячи про термінологічне словотворення, слід підкреслити той факт, що будь-яка термінологічна мова тісно пов’язана з основним словниковим складом літературної мови і розвивається за загальномовними законами, у тому числі словотворчими. Аналіз англійської наукової термінології показує, що деякі слова утворені за допомогою греко-латинських елементів. Разом із тим, їх роль і продуктивність у формуванні англійських термінів, які належать до сфери науки, ще недосить вивчені. В англійській мові продуктивність греко-латинських елементів обґрунтована історично, оскільки латинська мова слугувала базою для його формування. Незважаючи на те, що досі немає однозначного вирішення питання про словотворчий статус греко-латинських формантів, деякі дослідники виділяють їх в особливий розділ словотвору, що називається афіксація. Словотвірні особливості греко-латинських елементів дозволяють використовувати їх для передачі англійських наукових і технічних термінів, у тому числі й екологічних.

Over the last decades the terminology work has been carried out on such a wide range so that is seemingly difficult to say something new in this field. There is no common understanding of the underlying terms and the place of general terminology among scientific disciplines. Terminology as a science has its own peculiarities, which consists of the fact that a significant number of special words of speech are borrowed from other languages. This is due to the technological progress, cooperation of scientists around the world. So for many centuries the inexhaustible source of language of science for many nations were Latin and Greek and so it largely determined the nature of the terminology in various sciences. The article is devoted to the research of Greek and Latin affixes and their role in term formation on the basis of “Environmental Science” term system in modern English language. To mention the terminological word formation, one should emphasize the fact that any terminological language is closely related to the basic vocabulary of literary language and develops according to common rules, including word formation. An analysis of English scientific terminology shows that some words are formed using Greek and Latin elements. However, their role and productivity in the formation of English terms related to the field of science have not been sufficiently studied yet. The performance of the Greek and Latin elements is historically substantiated in English language. Although there is still no clear solution to the word formation status of the Greek and Latin formants, thus some scholars have identified them in a special section of word formation called affixation. Derivational features of the Greek and Latin elements make it possible to use them for the formation of English scientific and technical terms, including environmental ones.
