Функціонально-стилістичні особливості вживання фразеологізмів у творах Артура Конана Дойля

Abstract

Стаття присвячена аналізу провідних функції та стилістичних особливостей англомовних фразеологізмів у творах Артура Конана Дойля. Для досягнення визначеної мети застосовуються лінгвістичні методи дослідження контекстуально-інтерпретативний, компонентний аналіз, семантико-когнітивний та функціональний аналіз. Вивчення особливостей функціонування фразеологізмів у творах національної літератури дає змогу дослідити фразеологічний фонд мови в нормованій, літературній мові, розглянути класичні приклади вживання фразеологізмів і приклади авторської творчої модифікації народних висловів. У рамках нашого дослідження ми розглядаємо номінативну, оцінну, емоційно-експресивну, прагматичну функції фразеологізмів та функцію портретної характеристики персонажа. Фразеологічні одиниці виконують номінативну функцію і використовуються для позначення властивостей предметів та явищ. Оцінна функція дає змогу висловити ставлення до певної події або персонажу, дати йому оцінку − позитивну чи негативну. Часто спостерігається вживання ідіоматичних виразів з евфемістичним ефектом. Емоційно-експресивна функція з’являється там, де можна зіставити, посилити певні ознаки на підставі протиставлення передачі емоцій героїв художніх творів ,оживляючи мову твору, надаючи йому барв та емоційності. Прагматична функція фразеологізму, яка полягає у здійсненні впливу на адресанта фразеологічної одиниці, надає тексту яскравого забарвлення, передає настрій героя, спонукаючи читача співпереживати його невдачам. Також фразеологізми в текстах художніх творів можуть виконувати функцію портретної характеристики персонажа. Вони можуть описувати як зовнішність, так і внутрішній стан або характер героя художнього твору. Використання фразеологізмів у текстах творів А.К. Дойля дає змогу автору більш яскраво зобразити героїв творів та описувані ним події. Окрім того, фразеологізми надають експресії та стилістичної й естетичної характеристики твору, а інколи й відтворюють певні соціокультурні конотації. Перспективою подальших досліджень видається аналіз варіантів перекладу фразеологізмів у творах автора різних років та їх модифікації.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the leading functions and stylistic features of English phraseological units in the works by Arthur Conan Doyle. To achieve the aim of the article the following linguistic research methods are used: contextual- interpretive, component analysis, semantic-cognitive and functional analysis. Studying the peculiarities of the functioning of phraseological units in works of national literature allows us to explore the phraseological fund in standard literary language, to consider classical examples of idiomatic usage and examples of authors’ creative modification of folk expressions. In the framework of our research we are interested in the nominative, evaluative, emotional-expressive, pragmatic functions of phraseological units and the function of the portrait characteristics of the character. Phraseological units perform a nominative function and are used to denote the properties of objects and phenomena. The evaluation function allows authors to express their attitude to a certain event or character, to evaluate them either positively or negatively. The use of idiomatic expressions with a euphemistic effect is often observed. The emotional-expressive function appears where there is a possibility of comparison, strengthening of certain features when contrasting the transfer of characters’ emotions, reviving the language of the fictional works, giving it colours and emotions. The pragmatic function of phraseological units, which reflects the influence of the phraseological unit on the addressee, gives the text a brighter colour, conveys the mood of the character, encouraging the reader to empathize with his/her failures. Phraseological units in the literary works can also perform the function of a portrait characteristic of the character. They can describe both the appearance and the internal state or the mood of the character of the fictional work. Arthur Conan Doyle uses phraseological units to portray the characters and the events he describes more vividly. In addition, phraseological units add to expression and stylistic and aesthetic characteristics of the work, and sometimes reproduce certain socio-cultural connotations. The prospects of further research can include the analysis of translation variants of phraseological units in Arthur Conan Doyle’s works of different years and their modification.
