Концепт «Американська мрія» у романі Ф.С. Фіцджеральда «Великий Гетсбі»

Abstract

У статті розглядаються різні аспекти феномену «американська мрія» у романі Ф.С. Фіцджеральда «Великий Гетсбі». «Американська мрія» представлена як прагнення до успіху, згодом вона переростає в бажання наживи, у прагнення до багатства, що стало характерним для ХХ ст. – часу розчарування в «американській мрії», занепаду всіх традиційних духовних ідеалів. У статті наводяться приклади життєвого досвіду головних героїв роману й описуються наслідки погоні за «американською мрією». Досягнення цієї мрії пов’язане у героїв з утопічною вірою в щасливе майбутнє. Незважаючи на завзятість, практичність у досягненні поставленої мети, персонажі у своєму прагненні до швидкого збагачення чинять усупереч своїм моральним принципам або скоюють злочин. Це часто прзводить їх до розчарування у «мрії». Особливу увагу приділено тому факту, як американці ставляться до своєї історії й основним філософським концепціям. Необхідно підкреслити, що суперечки викликає не тільки питання про походження «американської мрії», а й сучасний стан цього концепту. Аналізуючи суспільно-історичний і культурний контекст появи романів Ф.С. Фіцджеральда, ми відзначили, що для Сполучених Штатів Америки кінець Першої світової війни означав рубіж історії. Романи, написані тоді у США, виділяються підвищеним інтересом до проблем політики та соціального становища. Френсіс Скотт Фіцджеральд зміг створити художню енциклопедію життя і сказати всю правду про Сполучені Штати Америки. «Великий Гетсбі» Френсіса Скотта Фіцджеральда вважається однією з культових книг ХХ ст. Головний герой, Гетсбі, став попередником цілої літературної династії загадково багатих особистостей із таємничим минулим. Роман, що втягує читача в атмосферу безперервного свята, характерну для Америки 20-х рр., був написаний у 1925 р. в розпал епохи джазу з її нестримними веселощами та моральним занепадом суспільства. Століття джазу – це також часи страшної убогості та незліченного багатства, епоха «нових американців», так званих «нуворишів», і чиказьких гангстерів. У статті приділяється увага представникам «втраченого покоління» – молодим людям, котрі втратили віру в батьківські ідеали. Вони прагнули до миттєвої насолоди, не замислюючись про майбутнє. Їм ніколи було чекати, поки здійсниться їхня американська мрія. Вони просто прагнули взяти від життя все, вважаючи, що мрія вже починає збуватися. Саме до таких людей автор відносить і Джея Гетсбі. Для американської літератури Гетсбі став символом втраченого покоління – настільки повно в його образі зібрані характерні риси молодих людей цієї епохи.

The article examines various aspects of the “American dream” phenomenon in Fitzgerald’s novel “The Great Gatsby”. The “American dream” is presented as a desire for success, later it grows into a desire for profit, a desire for wealth, which became characteristic of the 20th century – a time of disappointment in the “American dream”, the decline of all traditional spiritual ideals. The article gives examples of life experience of the main characters of the novel and describes the consequences of chasing of the “American dream”. Achieving this dream is associated in the heroes with a utopian belief in a happy future. Despite the perseverance, practicality in achieving the goal, the characters in their pursuit of rapid enrichment act contrary to their moral principles or commit a crime. This often leads them to frustration in “dream”. Particular attention is paid to the fact how Americans relate to their history and basic philosophical concepts. It is necessary to emphasize the fact that controversy is caused not only by the question of the origin of the “American dream”, but also by the current state of this concept. Analyzing the social, historical, and cultural context of the emergence of the novels of F.S. Fitzgerald noted that for the United States of America, the end of the First World War marked the milestone of history. In conclusion, the author says that the novels written in the United States at that time emphasize an increased interest in issues of politics and social status. The author concludes that Francis Scott Fitzgerald was able to create an artistic encyclopedia of life and was able to tell the whole truth about the United States of America. “The Great Gatsby” by Francis Scott Fitzgerald is considered to be one of the cult books of the 20th century. The main hero, Gatsby, became the predecessor of an entire literary dynasty of mysteriously wealthy personalities with a mysterious past. The novel, which draws the reader into the atmosphere of incessant celebration that is so characteristic of America in the 1920s, was written in 1925 at the height of the jazz era with its unbridled gaiety and moral decay of society. The jazz age is also a time of awful poverty and countless wealth, the era of the New Americans, the so-called nouveau riche, and the Chicago gangsters. The article focuses on the representatives of the “lost generation” – young people who have lost faith in parental ideals. They strove for instant pleasure without thinking about the future. They had no time to wait for their American dream to come true. They simply tried to take everything from life, believing that their dream began to come true. Jay Gatsby is referred to such people. For American literature, Gatsby has become a symbol of a lost generation; so many characteristic features of the young people of this era are collected in his image.
