Субстантиви на позначення особи сучасної англійської мови (на матеріалі похідних із суфіксом -ist)

Abstract

У статті представлено структурно-семантичну характеристику номінацій особи із суфіксом -ist сучасної англійської мови, показано їх співвідношення з мотиваторами, окреслено тематичну класифікацію. Фактичний матеріал зібрано зі словників та публікацій з неології. Питанням членування слова на морфеми, визначенню відносин між мотиваторами та похідними словами англійської мови присвячено роботи багатьох дослідників: О. Єсперсена, Г. Марчанда, В. Адамс, Л. Бауера, Р. С. Гінзбург, О. І. Смирницького, Н. М. Раєвської, О. Д. Мєшкова, П. М. Каращука, П. В. Царьова та інших вчених. Типологія словотвірних значень похідних обумовлена мовними характеристиками мотиваторів. Досліджувані імена особи утворено переважно від субстантивів, які, як мотиватори, мають певний потенціал, зумовлений типом організації їх семантичної структури: багатоаспектність семантики іменників дозволяє їм вступати у велику кількість словотворчих зв’язків. Семантика похідних слів по-різному пов’язана зі значеннями своїх мотиваторів. Семантичне співвідношення одиниць мотиваційних пар у наших матеріалах представлена трьома типами: а) семантичні об’єми похідного та мотиватора рівні; б) семантичний об’єм похідного вужчий семантичного об’єму мотиватора; в) семантичний об’єм похідного ширший семантичного об’єму мотиватора. Специфіка суфікса -ist пов’язана з його іншомовним походженням і проявляється в тому, що він бере участь виключно у творенні найменувань осіб і не називає предмети. Згадані одиниці – одне з джерел поповнення лексичного запасу сучасної англійської мови. Подальше поглиблене вивчення найменувань особи із суфіксом -ist є перспективним: воно дозволить виявити точки дотику та взаємодії подібних номінацій у різних мовах, допоможе прояснити деякі спірні та невирішені питання словотвору. Цікаво, що безперервний розвиток лексичних систем різних мов дає необмежений матеріал для дослідження.

The article deals with the structural and semantic characteristics of the nominations with a meaning ‘a person’ with the suffix -ist in Modern English, their correlation with motivators and the thematic classification of the nouns. The factual material is extracted from dictionaries and publications on neology. The works of many English researchers, such as R. S. Ginzburg, A. I. Smirnitsky, N. N. Raevskaya, O. D. Meshkov, P. M. Karashchuk, P. V. Tsarev and others are devoted to the issues of dividing a word into morphemes, determining the relationship between motivators and derivatives. The works of O. Jespersen, G. Marchand, V. Adams, L. Bauer are also of particular interest. The typology of derivational meanings of derivatives is determined by the part-speech characteristics of their motivators. Nominations with the meaning ‘a person’ with the suffix -ist in Modern English are derived mainly from nouns. As motivators, they have a certain potential, due to the type of organization of their semantic structure: the multidimensionality of the semantics of nouns allows them to join into a large number of word-building connections. The semantics of derivatives is related in different ways to the meanings of their motivators. In our materials the semantic correlation in motivational pairs is represented by three types: a) the semantic content of the derivative and the motivator are equal; b) the semantic content of the derivative is narrower than the semantic content of the motivator; c) the semantic content of the derivative is wider than the semantic content of the motivator. The specificity of the suffix -ist is associated with its foreign origin and is manifested in the fact that it takes part exclusively in the formation of the nominations with the meaning ‘a person’ and does not form objects. Nominations with a meaning ‘a person’ with the suffix -ist are one of the origin of replenishment of the vocabulary of Modern English. Further research seems to be perspective: it will allow to identify common aspects of similar nominations in different languages; it will help to clarify some controversial and unresolved issues of word formation. It is remarkable that the development of the lexical systems of different languages provides unlimited material for the research.
