Краткий осмотр (реферат): In modern conditions of reforming the higher education system and the expansion of international integration processes, the importance of mastering the skills of communication and translation from a foreign language has significantly increased, as well the interest of scientists of various fields in the problem of teaching translation, which has led to a significant change in views on the role of translation in teaching language and, as a result, influenced the practice of language teaching. However, debates among teachers and linguists on the use of translation as a means of teaching a foreign language are still going on. Although translation has never really disappeared from the practice of language teaching, tasks based on translation are mainly used to raise awareness of foreign language grammar. Therefore, the present study is an attempt to determine how and how often university teachers of non-linguistic specialties use translation in their English classes. In addition, the article examines students' preferences regarding the effectiveness of translation in language teaching and learning. This paper also aims at giving a brief overview of the latest research on the use of translation in language teaching, to determine its role in achieving the expected results of learning a foreign language and ways of integrating translation into the modern course of teaching foreign languages to students of non-linguistic specialties at higher educational institutions. To accomplish the set aims, the objectives of the study were to examine the attitudes of teachers and students towards the use of translation in classroom instruction and students' independent work, analyze the choice of teaching materials and outline the ways to improve the use of translation in teaching EFL. We believe that despite the controversy among linguists on the use of translation in teaching English as a foreign language, it remains a useful tool if used appropriately and purposefully.
