Вільний підхід у викладанні англійської мови

Abstract

У статті висвітлюються основні ідеї Л. Меддінгза, С. Торнбері, Д. Райт та їх послідовників щодо вільного підходу до викладання англійської мови. Також в статті розглядаються особливості використання цього підходу в роботі зі студентами-першокурсниками як з перспективи студента, так і викладача, що має на меті формування цілісного уявлення про сучасні тенденції у царині викладання іноземної мови і їх вплив на мовні компетенції студентства. Дослідження звертається до методу компаративного аналізу (з його допомогою була визначена відмінність вільного підходу від традиційних методів викладання англійської мови); прогнозування – це метод, який уможливив окреслення напрямків майбутніх досліджень за темою, а також допоміг визначити вільний підхід в якості основного в контексті майбутнього розвитку викладання англійської мови як навчальної дисципліни; структурно-функціональний метод направлений на виокремлення найменших елементів вільного підходу (наприклад, слова привітання в класі, розділові питання, заповнювачі пауз, тощо.), поєднання яких формує загальну систему роботи, спрямовану на активну комунікативну діяльність. Вперше у вітчизняній науці вільний підхід розглядається в якості основного для роботи зі студентами-першокурсникам. Визначається методична спадкоємність між шкільною і вищою освітою, що пов’язано з реформою української школи щодо викладання іноземних мов, зокрема англійської. В дослідженні розкривається сутність такого вміння педагога як можливість адаптувати власне мовлення до поточного рівня знань студентів і одночасно стимулювати активну комунікативну діяльність всередині студентського колективу. Критичний аналіз вільного підходу уможливив низку важливих узагальнень. Комунікативна спрямованість викладання англійської мови студентам-першокурсникам – це пріоритетне завдання сучасного викладача-мовника. В центрі навчальної діяльності – студенти, їх життєвий досвід і щоденні переживання, які виступають матеріалом для навчального процесу. Згідно вільного підходу, немає мінімального рівня знань, необхідних для навчальної діяльності. Натомість викладач допомагає аудиторії використовувати поточний рівень знань максимально ефективно, поступово збагачуючи мову новими граматичними і лексичними елементами. Осмислене використання вільного підходу допомагає опанувати зв’язне мовлення швидше, оскільки кожне заняття – це акт соціальної взаємодії, що спонукає до активної розмовної практики.

The article deals with the covering of the core ideas provided by such authors as Meddings L., Thornbury S., Wright J., and their followers regarding the so-called free approach to teaching English. Also, in the article the peculiarities of using this approach in the work with first-year students are considered, both from the perspective of a student and teacher, that aims to form the complete holistic view of the modern trends in the field of language teaching and their impact on the communicative competences of studentship. The study is based on the comparative analysis method with the help of which the difference between the free approach and traditional methods of language teaching was defined. Prediction is a method that made it possible to provide the perspective of the future studies in the context of the given topic, and also helped to define the free approach as the main one in the context of the future development of teaching English as an academic discipline. Structural and functional analysis aims to detect the smallest elements of the free approach such as greetings in the classroom, tag questions, gap-fillers, and so on. Scientific originality lies in the fact that for the first time in the domestic science the free approach is considered as the main way of working with first-year students. The methodical continuity between the school and higher education is defined, which is linked to the reform of the Ukrainian school in the context of foreign language teaching, in particular, English. The study reveals the essence of the teacher’s ability to adapt his or her own speech to the current level of students’ knowledge and at the same time encourage the active communicative work inside the group of students. The critical analysis of the free approach made it possible to make a range of important conclusions. The communicative orientation of teaching English to the first-year students is the priority task of the modern language teacher. Students are in the center of teaching activity, their life experience and everyday emotions, which serve as the material for studying activity. According to the free approach, there is no minimum level of knowledge required for studying. Instead, the teacher helps the audience to use the current level of knowledge as efficiently as possible, gradually enriching the students’ speech with new grammatical and lexical elements. The meaningful use of the free approach helps to master the coherent speech faster as every class is an act of social interaction that encourages students to the active conversational practice.
