Латинський іменник tempus як спільне джерело італійських tempo і tempia: специфіка історико-фонетичного розвитку

Abstract

Статтю присвячено проблемі визначення етимології італійської лексеми tempia – «скроня» та її зв’язку з лексемою tempο – «час», оскільки обидві лексеми відповідають омонімічній парі латинських іменників tempus1 / tempus2. Історико-фонетичний та морфологічний аналіз процесу розвитку tempus1 демонструє регулярну зміну в tempo, тоді як зміна tempus2 в tempia не виявляється можливою без втручання інших семантико-мотиваційних факторів. У процесі дослідження береться до уваги той факт, що tempus1 вживалося переважно в формі однини, тоді як tempus2 – у формі множини tempora , яка згодом застигла в формі однини жіночого роду. Оскільки форма tempora теж фонетично не відповідає кінцевому результату tempia, на основі відомих фонетичних закономірностей встановлюється форма templa, яка передувала tempia. Подальше дослідження розглядає потенційні джерела форми templa, в першу чергу – можливість семантичної деривації від лексеми templum – «храм» (іт. tempio), яка має форму множини templa. Оскільки італійські діалекти засвідчують метафоричні найменування скроні, похідні від латинських іменників somnus – «сон», mens – «розум», memoria – «пам’ять», висувається припущення про розвиток у templum значення «скроня» на підставі засвідченого виразу «templa mentis» – «чертоги розуму». Спростовує дану гіпотезу збереження в деяких романських мовах різних коренів на позначення скроні та храму. Інша гіпотеза пропонує реконструйовану форму *tempula, яка може бути результатом морфологічної деривації від кореня temp-. На її користь говорить наявність діалектизму i tę́mpuli, проте жіночий рід запропонованої форми та відсутність підстав для її поширення ставлять під сумнів дійсне утворення *tempula на зміну наявного tempora. Остання гіпотеза випливає з діалектологічного аналізу зони поширення сучасного tempia: на південних межах даної зони наявні форми, що зберігають ознаки латинского tempora: le tę́mp̩ərə, una tę́mp̩ra та інші. Висувається припущення про фонетичну зміну tempora > *tempra > templa > tempia, де форма *tempra пояснюється редукцією і подальшим синкопуванням голосного [o] в заударному складі, а форма templa – як результат нерегулярної, але засвідченої в епоху середньовіччя заміни [pr] > [pl]. Дана теорія виявляється найбільш обґрунтованою та рекомендується для подальшого використання на пояснення походження лексеми tempia.

The article is devoted to the problem of identifying the etymology of the Italian word tempia – “temple”(a side of the head) and its connection with the word tempο – “time”, given that both words correspond to the homonymous pair of the Latin nouns tempus1 / tempus2. Phonetic and morphological analysis of the development process of tempus1 demonstrates a regular change into tempo, while the change of tempus2 into tempia doesn’t appear to be possible without an intervention of other semantically motivated factors. It has been taken into consideration that tempus1 was more often used in the singular form, while tempus2 tended to be used in the plural form tempora, which later became fixed as a feminine singular form. Since the form tempora in terms of phonetics also doesn’t correspond to the outcome tempia, there was determined the form templa that according to the phonetical rules was the one to preceed tempia. Further research regards potential sources of the form templa, first of all, the possibility of semantic derivation from the word templum – “temple” (a building, = it. tempio), whose plural form is templa. Since Italian dialects attest some metaphorical names for tempia, derived from the Latin nouns somnus – “sleep”, mens – “mind”, memoria – “memory”, it is suggested that the word templum developed the meaning tempia after the attested expression “templa mentis” – “rooms of the mind”. Nevertheless, the hypothesis is refuted by the fact that some Romance languages preserve different roots for tempia and tempio. Another hypothesis suggests a reconstructed form *tempula, which may be the result of a morphological derivation from the root temp-. It may be the dialect form i tę́mpuli to speak in its favor but the feminine gender of the proposed form and the lack of grounds for its spread doubt the real formation of *tempula and replacing the present tempora with it. The last hypothesis follows from the dialectological analysis of the modern tempia distribution zone: there are forms on its southern borders that preserve the traces of the Latin tempora: le tę́mp̩ ərə, una tę́mp̩ ra etc. An assumption is put forward about the phonetic change tempora > *tempra > templa > tempia, where the form *tempra is explained by the reduction and subsequent syncope of the vowel [o] in the posttonic syllable, and the form templa is the result of an irregular but attested in the Middle Ages substitution of [pr] with [pl]. This theory turns out to be the most justified and is recommended for further use while explaining the origin of the word tempia.
