Способи утворення оказіоналізмів в романах Дж. К. Роулінґ про Гаррі Поттера

Abstract

Представлене дослідження представляє собою спробу визначити основні способи утворення оказіоналізмів в романах Дж. К. Роулінґ про Гаррі Поттера. Вибір матеріалу дослідження зумовлено насиченістю творів про юного чаклуна «новаторською та унікальною» термінологією, що значно збагатила англійську мову. Оказіоналізми – це авторські неологізми, які утворюються за правилами словотвору та лише в умовах певного контексту як лексичний засіб художньої виразності. Вони відображають особливості світобачення автора твору, розширюють образні засоби і слугують одним із способів творення мовної гри. Оказіоналізмам притаманна низка характерних рис: незафіксованість у словнику, спонтанність створення, порушення норм вживання, короткочасність та одноразовість вживання, однозначність, експресивність значення, залежність від контексту. Оказіоналізми є безеквівалентними лексичними одиницями, тому, як правило, вони не перекладаються, а «передаються» засобами цільової мови, що вимагає від перекладача значної ерудованості та креативності. Проведене дослідження дозволяє стверджувати, що найпоширенішим способом утворення оказіональних слів в романах про Гаррі Поттера є афіксація. Знання значень суфіксів і префіксів допомагає визначити значення незнайомих слів, утворених від вже знайомих. Важливо, що в оказіональному словотворенні зовсім необов’язково використовувати афікси англійської мови. Трапляються випадки, коли оказіональне слово утворено за допомогою граматик інших мов. Також зафіксовані оказіоналізми, що з’явилися завдяки скороченню (абревіації). Окрім цього, мають місце такі словотвірні процеси як контамінація та конверсія. Поширено вживання запозичень з латинської, грецької, французької та інших мов.

The given research is an attempt to establish the major means of nonce words creation in Harry Potter novels by J. K. Rowling. The choice of the material for investigation is due to the fullness of the stories about the young wizard with “innovative” terminology that has greatly enriched the modern English language. Nonce words are the author’s neologisms that are created according to the word-formation rules and are used only in a particular context as a lexical expressive means. They reflect the peculiarities of the author’s world outlook, expand figurative means and serve as one of the ways of creating play on words. Nonce words are characterized by the following traits: they are not fixed in dictionaries, their creation is spontaneous, their usage violates language standards, they are employed only once within a short period of time, they are monosemantic, but have expressive meaning, they depend on the context. Nonce words are non-equivalent lexical units, that’s why they are not translated but interpreted with the help of lingual means of the target language. This task demands much creativity and wide knowledge of the realia translated from interpreter. The carried out investigation allows to say that the widest spread ways of nonce words formation in Harry Potter novels is affixation. Knowing the meaning of suffixes and prefixed added helps to define the meaning of unknown words that have been created from the already known ones. It is important to emphasize that occasional word-formation does not always require the English affixes. It sometimes occurs that a nonce word is created with the help of grammars of other languages. Besides affixation, we have fixed nonce words created by means of shortening (or abbreviation). Such word-formation processes as contamination and conversion take places as well. Wide usage of Latin, Greek, French, etc. borrowings is fixed too.
