Британська Рада в Україні: головні напрями, етапи та результати діяльності (1992–2024)

Abstract

Проаналізовано мовний, освітній, соціальний та культурно-мистецький напрями діяльності Британської Ради в Україні протягом 1992–2024 рр. Ключовими етапами функціонування інституції були: 1) період становлення (1990-ті – початок 2000-х рр.); 2) розширення діяльності та поглиблення зв’язків із цільовими аудиторіями (початок 2000-х рр. – середина 2010-х рр.); 3) робота з урахуванням викликів та умов воєнного часу (з 2014 р., а особливо з 2022 р.). Головними результатами діяльності Британської Ради в Україні є формування позитивного іміджу Сполученого Королівства, популяризація та зростання ваги англійської мови, а також розвиток активних груп громадянського суспільства в країні.

The article considers the main directions, stages, features and results of the British Council's activity in Ukraine during 1992–2024. The British Council is one of the most known and influential public diplomacy institutions involved in promoting the international image of the United Kingdom, its language, culture and values. The main areas of the institution's activities in Ukraine are linguistic, educational, social and cultural-artistic. The first two areas are quite closely interrelated, since the main emphasis in interaction with school and higher education is on learning the English language. In addition, the activities of the British Council in these areas take place in close cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. The key stages of the institution's functioning in Ukraine are: 1) the formative period (1990s – early 2000s); 2) expansion of activities and deepening of relations with target audiences (early 2000s – mid-2010s); 3) activity taking into account the challenges and conditions of wartime (since 2014, and especially since 2022). At the last stage, the British Council has been focusing on the needs of people and institutions most affected by the war. The main target groups to which the British Council's programs in Ukraine are primarily aimed are pupils and students, teachers and lecturers, as well as social activists and artists. The predominantly young audience covered by British Council projects is generally quite numerous. The main results of the British Council's activities in Ukraine are the formation of the United Kingdom's positive image, the popularization and growing importance of the English language, as well as the development of active civil society groups in the country. In general, the activities of the British Council contribute to the Europeanization of Ukraine, its closer integration with Western civilization.
