Лексичні особливості діалогічного мовлення у романі Г. Джеймса “The Portrait of a Lady”

Abstract

У статті розглядаються особливості персонажного діалогічного мовлення, а саме такий тип як «світська бесіда», у романі Г. Джеймса “The Portrait of a Lady” з точки зору категорії комунікативної лінгвістики. Метою даної статті є аналіз та характеристики системи діалогів у творі та лексичні особливості «світської бесіди». Діалогічне мовлення залежить від таких чинників як суспільна ситуація, тематика, ставлення співрозмовників один до одного. Особливістю діалогів у даному романі є те, що їх можливо віднести до «світської бесіди». В якості комунікативної направленості «світська бесіда» – це спілкування для встановлення або продовження відносин (в залежності від ситуації спілкування, зокрема від ступеня знайомства співрозмовників). Ми можемо стверджувати, що це – один з етапів знайомства, та стратегія управління дистанцією між співрозмовниками. Вона виконує багато функцій, допомагаючи встановити стосунки між друзями, колегами та новими знайомими. Зокрема, допомагає новим знайомим вивчити та класифікувати соціальне становище одне одного. «Світська бесіда» – це особливий тип соціального спілкування, при якому обговорення певної проблеми не вимагає її рішення. Аналіз засвідчує константу стрижневої мети світського спілкування – ініціація і позитивний розвиток вербального контакту – й фіксує зміни в часо-просторовій осі комунікації. Виокремлено три основні теми «світської бесіди»: подорожі, мистецтво, виховання, визначено групи тематичної лексики. Проаналізовано основні прагматичні функції світського діалогу у тексті роману: знайомство, натяк, оцінка та комплімент, які також характеризуються відповідною тематичною лексикою; розглянуто гендерні особливості діалогів у романі. Розмова між жінками – це обмін компліментами, розмова про освіту, виховання. Чоловіча бесіда направлена на розмежування позицій, встановлення контакту, знайомство та обговорення у вигляді суперечки. Про високе соціальне положення та освіту учасників «світської бесіди» свідчать слова літературного стиля, іншомовна лексика, кліше та відсутність зниженої лексики. Серед стилістичних прийомів було виокремлено епітети, метафори, антономазію, тощо.

The article under consideraton examines the peculiarities of the dialogue, namely such a special type known as “small talk”, in the novel “The Portrait of a Lady” by Henry James, precisely in the category of communicative linguistics. The purpose of this article is the analysis and characteristics of the system of dialogues in the novel and lexical peculiarities of “small talk”. The peculiarities of the dialogue depend on such factors as the social situation, the topic, and the attitude of the interlocutors to each other. The peculiarity of the dialogues in this novel is that they can be attributed to “small talk”. In the terms of the communicative means, “small talk” is a type of communication which aims at establishing or continuing relations (depending on the communication situation, in particular, on the degree of familiarity of the counterparts). We can claim that this is one of the stages of getting to know each other, and a strategy for managing the distance between interlocutors. It performs many functions, helping to establish relationships between friends, colleagues and new acquaintances. In particular, it helps new acquaintances to learn and classify each other’s social status. “Small talk” is a special type of social communication in which the discussion of a certain problem does not require its solution. The analysis confirms the constant core goal of social communication – the initiation and positive development of verbal contact – and records changes in the time-space axis of communication. Three main topics of “small talk” have been defined: travelling, art, education; the groups of thematic vocabulary have been singled out. The main pragmatic functions of secular dialogue in the text of the novel have been mentioned: acquaintance, hint, assessment and compliment, which are also characterized by the appropriate thematic vocabulary; gender features of dialogues in the novel have been considered. A conversation between women is an exchange of compliments, a conversation about education, upbringing. Men’s conversation is aimed at distinguishing positions, establishing contact, getting to know each other and discussing in the form of an argument. The high social status and education of the participants of the “small talk” are evidenced by literary vocabulary, foreign vocabulary, clichés, and the absence of colloquial vocabulary. Such stylistic devices as epithets, metaphors, antonomasia, etc. have been singled out.
