Особливості композиційно-сюжетної структури роману Емілі Сент-Джон Мандел «Море спокою»

Abstract

У статті розглядаються особливості роману «Море спокою», сучасної канадської письменниці Емілі Сент-Джон Мандел, чия творчість отримала широкий резонанс серед читачів і критиків Канади й США, проте є мало вивченою в українській літературній спільноті. Метою статті є виявлення особливостей композиційно-сюжетної структури роману «Море спокою». Дослідження композиційно-сюжетних особливостей роману є актуальним, тому що сприяє вивченню художньої своєрідності твору, розкриттю його глибинних смислів. Завданнями статті є виявлення рис, специфічних та неспецифічних для жанру наукової фантастики, притаманних роману «Море спокою», з’ясування композиційних прийомів, які використовуються у романі, а також вивчення особливостей репрезентації часопростору, як важливого компонента композиційно-сюжетної моделі твору. Під час дослідження було використано герменевтичний, контекстуально-інтерпретаційний та структурно-типологічний методи. У результаті проведеного дослідження встановлено, що роман «Море спокою» репрезентує універсальні концепти жанру наукової фантастики: інша планета (місячні колонії), подорож у часі (у минуле і майбутнє), високі технології (роботи, інститут часу, міжгалактичні подорожі, системи керування сонячним світлом) та розглядає наукову гіпотезу «симуляції світу». Специфічними рисами для жанру наукової фантастики, наявними у романі «Море спокою» є автобіографічні факти, елементи містики та трилера, введення персонажів із попереднього роману «Скляний готель». У творі є алюзії до певних історичних подій, таких як Британське завоювання Індії, переселення до Канади, пандемії, схеми Понці. Оригінальність композиційної побудови роману полягає в поєднанні нелінійної структури часу з фрагментарно-круговою структурою сюжету та поліфонічністю персонажів. Різноманітність типів часово-просторових відносин (ретроспекція, проспекція, історичний час, аномалія часу), що взаємодіють між собою, сприяє динамічному розвитку сюжету та формуванню змішаної художньої реальності, яка актуалізує образ світу на межі існування.

The article examines the peculiarities of the novel “The Sea of Tranquillity” written by a contemporary Canadian writer Emily St. John Mandel, whose works of fiction have been widely praised by readers and critics in Canada and the United States but has received relatively little scholarly attention in the Ukrainian literary community. The article aims to identify the peculiarities of the compositional and plot structure of the novel “The Sea of Tranquillity”. The study of the compositional and plot features of the narrative is relevant because it contributes to the definition of the artistic originality of the text and the disclosure of its deeper meanings. The objectives of the article are to identify the features that are nonspecific to the science fiction genre inherent in the novel “The Sea of Tranquillity”, to clarify the compositional techniques used in the novel, and to study the peculiarities of space-time representation as an essential component of the compositional and plot model of a literary work. The research used the hermeneutic, contextual and interpretive, structural and typological methods. It was determined that the novel “The Sea of Tranquillity” represents the universal concepts of the science fiction genre: another planet (lunar colonies), time travel (to the past and the future), high technologies (robots, the time institute, intergalactic travel, sunlight control systems) and it considers the scientific hypothesis of “world simulation”. The specific features of the science fiction genre presented in “The Sea of Tranquillity” are autobiographical facts, elements of mysticism, and thriller. The work contains allusions to certain historical events, such as the British conquest of India, immigration to Canada, pandemics, and the Ponzi scheme. The novel’s unique compositional structure is formed by combining a non-linear time structure with a fragmentary circular plot structure and polyphonic characters. The variety of types of time-space relations (retrospective, prospective, historical time, time anomaly) that interact with each other contributes to the dynamic development of the plot and the formation of a mixed artistic reality that actualizes the image of the world on the brink of existence.
