Abstract: The article is devoted to the analysis of genre and stylistic tendencies of Ukrainian short stories on military theme at the end of XIXth – the beginning of XXth centuries. Theme of war is actualized the ontological markers of the human being, the relationship of the human’s life with the world in the Ukrainian short story. Therefore, the article deals with the attempts to study the philosophizing of artists on the meaning of human existence in the existential situations caused by the war, and in the context of national liberation struggles of Ukrainians at the turn of past centuries of short stories by Marko Cheremshyna, Olha Kobylianska, Vasyl’ Stefanyk etc. Peculiarities and patterns of problematic formation as well as formation of prose poetics, structural features, genre stylistic specificity and imagery of Ukrainian short stories on military theme have been studied. The article explicates further aspects of the study of Ukrainian short stories.
