«Ботокуди» Федора Одрача: проблема здеформованої національної ідентичності українців

Abstract

У статті на матеріалі оповідання Федора Одрача «Ботокуди» (збірка «Півстанок за селом» (Буенос-Айрес, 1959)) досліджено проблему здеформованої національної ідентичності українців. Простежено інтертекстуальні зв’язки з творчістю Т. Шевченка періоду «трьох літ», сатиричною поемою І. Франка «Ботокуди», усмішками Остапа Вишні, наголошено на наскрізній алегоричності оповідання Федора Одрача. Зауважено, що проблему місця та ролі українського письменника в діаспорному середовищі треба розглядати в контексті ширших соціокультурних і політичних проблем. Образу Копилюка, письменника, який походив із ботокудів, але втратив їхні риси безхребетності й підпорядкування сильнішому, в оповіданні приділено найбільше уваги невипадково. За задумом автора, він прагне побороти здеформовану ідентичність спільноти ботокудів, вибудувати ідеальний національний характер. Із цією метою він написав сатирично-викривальний роман «Схаменіться, ботокуди!». Ментальний характер проблеми демонструє образ умонтованого в голові ботокуда гібрида-молоточка, який виконує каральну функцію за зраду рідного. Однак загал – ботокуди як алегорія денаціоналізованих українців у діаспорі – не сприймає ідеї тексту й не хоче очищення. Гротескним вираженням національної корозії є образ Гаврила зі зігнутим хребтом, якого зневажають навіть ботокуди. Закцентовано, що в оповіданні письменник найбільше приділяє уваги мовному аспекту національної ідентичності та ролі письменника у процесі відродження національного. У макаронічному мовленні ботокудів простежується виразне намагання асимілюватися з англійською мовою, проте трапляється і вплив російської. Вираженням національної корозії є також видозмінені імена та прізвища. Доведено, що злободенність проблематики, засоби сатири, інтертекстуальні зв’язки, прозора алегоричність, мовний аспект оповідання Федора Одрача «Ботокуди» забезпечують належне місце твору в історико-літературному процесі.

The article, based on Fedir Odrach's short story "Botokudy" (from the collection “Pivstanok za selom” (Buenos Aires, 1959)), examines the issue of the deformed national identity of Ukrainians. Intertextual connections with the works of T. Shevchenko from the “Three Years” (“Try lita”) period, I. Franko’s satirical poem “Botokudy,” Ostap Vyshnia’s humorous sketches are traced, and the pervasive allegorical nature of Fedir Odrach's story is emphasized. It is noted that the issue of the place and role of the Ukrainian writer in the diaspora environment should be considered in the context of broader sociocultural and political problems. The character of Kopyliuk, a writer who originated from the Botokudy but lost the characteristic traits of spinelessness and submission to the stronger, is deliberately given the most attention in the story. The author's intention is to show that he seeks to overcome the deformed identity of the Botokudy community and build an ideal national character. That’s why he wrote the satirical-revelatory novel “Shame on you, Botocudy!” The mental nature of the problem is demonstrated through the image of the hybrid-hammer embedded in the head of a person from Botokudy, which performs a punitive function for betraying one's roots. However, the public – the Botokudy as an allegory of denationalized Ukrainians in the diaspora – does not accept the ideas of the text and rejects purification. A grotesque expression of national corrosion is the image of Havrylo with a crooked spine, who is despised even by the people of Botokudy. The writer particularly emphasizes in this story the linguistic aspect of national identity and the role of the writer in the process of national revival. The macaronic language of the people of Botokudy shows a clear attempt to assimilate into the English language, though Russian influence is also present. The corrosion of national identity is also expressed through changed names and surnames. It is proven that the topicality of the issues, the use of satire, intertextual connections, transparent allegory, and the linguistic aspect of Fedir Odrach’s story “Botokudy” ensure the work’s rightful place in the historical-literary process.
