Пантеїстичні мотиви у поезії Тараса Шевченка «Розрита могила», «Заповіт», «Село», «Мені тринадцятий минало», «І мертвим, і живим…» в англійській інтерпретації Джона Віра та Віри Річ

Abstract

Стаття присвячена аналізу пантеїстичних мотивів у поезії Тараса Шевченка та їх інтерпретації в англомовних перекладах Джона Віра та Віри Річ. Звернено увагу на те, як перекладачі передають гармонію між природою, людиною та божественним, що є центральною ідеєю творчості Шевченка. Використано компаративний структурно-семантичний аналіз для порівняння оригінального тексту й перекладених версій. Окрему увагу приділено збереженню стилістичних і ритмічних особливостей оригіналу, а також адаптації образів і символів для англомовної аудиторії. Дослідження охоплює твори «За горами гори...», «Розрита могила», «І мертвим, і живим...», «Як умру, то поховайте...», «Княжна», «Мені тринадцятий минало...». У статті показано, як Джон Вір та Віра Річ відтворюють символіку природи, яка у Шевченка виступає відображенням божественного порядку. Віра Річ зосереджується на святковій гармонійності природи, водночас Джон Вір акцентує на її динаміці й силі, підкреслюючи зв’язок із боротьбою за свободу. Пантеїстичні мотиви, такі як зв’язок природи з божественним і людською душею, передаються через використання метафор, символів і ритмічних конструкцій, які адаптуються відповідно до вимог англомовного контексту. Результати дослідження свідчать, що перекладачі зберігають основну ідею Шевченкової поезії, але змінюють акценти залежно від своїх перекладацьких стратегій. У Віри Річ пантеїзм частіше інтерпретується через образи гармонійної природи, тоді як Джон Вір підкреслює її силу й символіку свободи. Незважаючи на відмінності, обидва перекладачі демонструють глибоке розуміння творчості Шевченка, зберігаючи її багатогранність і універсальність.

Introduction. The article analyzes the contents of the original works of Taras Shevchenko with a focus on pantheistic motifs as interpreted in the English translations by John Weir and Vera Rich. These translations are explored in the context of Shevchenko’s profound connection between nature, humanity, and the divine, reflecting his philosophical worldview. The study also highlights the relevance of Shevchenko’s poetry to contemporary challenges faced by Ukraine, particularly the ongoing war since 2014 and the full-scale invasion in 2022. The purpose. The purpose of this investigation is to identify pantheistic motifs and images in the original poems of Taras Shevchenko and analyze how they are represented in the English translations by John Weir and Vera Rich. The study aims to explore the degree of correspondence between the original texts and their translations, particularly in the context of stylistic, cultural, and semantic fidelity. The methods. The investigation employs comparative structural and semantic analysis, alongside synthesis. Component and linguistic analysis are used to examine the grammatical and semantic correspondence between the original texts and their English translations. Main results of the study. The analysis identifies whether the translators successfully conveyed the pantheistic motifs of Shevchenko’s poetry through the means of the English language and evaluates the accuracy and stylistic integrity of their interpretations. Originality. The originality of this study lies in its focus on the translation of Shevchenko’s works through the lens of pantheism, a perspective that has not been previously explored in translation studies. Conclusions and specific suggestions of the author. Comparing the Ukrainian originals of Shevchenko’s poetry to their English translations by John Weir and Vera Rich reveals that both translators effectively conveyed the pantheistic imagery and philosophical depth of the works. They succeeded in preserving the poetic, stylistic, and emotional integrity of the originals while adapting them to the English language. The translations demonstrate the translators’ mastery in capturing the spiritual and cultural essence of Shevchenko’s works, showcasing their skill in the art of poetic translation.
